Art Attack retrospective

So, Art Attack was super fun! My fellow Jersey City Craft Mafiosa, Emily August took some lovely pictures of the event. As you can see, we had some really fantastic vendors.

Morristown Armory Craft Market

A while back, my friend Kate told me about the Morristown Armory Craft Market, which she swears this is her favorite craft event of all time. When she invited me to come along this past weekend, I couldn't resist.

We were lucky enough to have free guest passes from vendors Kate had purchased from in previous years so we glided by the admission area like VIPs. I was impressed as we walked through the doors. It was clear that we were in the presence of career artisans. Below are three artists who I felt were especially memorable.

One of the first booths we stopped at was Margaret Wozniak's. I was immediately touched by the gentle, whimsical element of her work. My favorites were her Pegasus pieces whose kind gazes and soft features immediately transported me back to a feeling of comfort and elation reminiscent of childhood.

Another artist of note was Greg Stones. We were first drawn to the rich color and detail of his watercolors which were done on an incredibly intricate scale. However, we were particularly delighted at the deliciously twisted sense of humor portrayed in his paintings. We actually burst out laughing several times. Penguins, sheep, zombies, aliens - need I say more?

Finally, Hilary Greif's designs showcased vintage found items crafted into unique jewelry pieces. We fell in love with a pendant featuring a pristinely intact garter button from the early 1900s. I also enjoyed her re-purposed Lenox pieces so much that I bought one for myself!

When I came home, I accented the pendant with a freshwater pearl and a glass flower bead to create this necklace - which I've been wearing constantly since the show!

Pincushion log that looks like a dessert cake...

My newfound obsession with embroidery sent me on a hunt for a beginner's guide with patterns and samples that actually appealed to my aesthetic. Amidst a sea of tired old flowers on embroidery hoops, Aimee Ray's Doodle Stitching, proved to offer a delightful angle on this timeless craft.

I was first drawn to the whimsical design on the cover and found each pattern included to be cuter than the next. Additionally, her instructions are easy to follow, with helpful diagrams every step of the way.

Tonight I spent the evening making the "Wooden Pincushion" which is something I actually really needed. Since I'm still building my embroidery floss arsenal, I had to take a little creative license on the colors, using pink instead of light brown. This unfortunately (or fortunately), led to my pincushion looking like some sort of weird dessert cake rather than a tree stump.

I do still consider this endeavor to be a success. I now have a functional pincushion which will come in handy as I continue my love affair with embroidery.

Spring is probably my favorite time of year. When the sun breaks through the haze of winter, the colors are brighter and the air is sweeter. I can't help but feel the pull toward hope and renewal and possibility.

Anyway... in the spirit of this feeling, I'm committing to incorporating as many earth-friendly materials into my work as possible. Since the beginning of the year, I have been in addition to working through my stash, I've been unraveling pre-loved sweaters and scarves to crochet new projects. In the event that the re-purposed yarn won't work in a particular project, I am committing using natural fibers - organic when possible (like these new organic cotton necklaces!) or recycled acrylic yarns.

I'm really looking forward to this challenge and am interested in hearing about ways in which you've made your art or your life in general a little "greener."

Today, I was inspired by this tutorial at CraftStylish. I went to GoodWill and purchased a few neckties to test out my new skill.

This tie is my first attempt. I did a freehand owl design that I'd drawn up for another project. I'm pleased to report that the whole thing was done over two episodes of House - including embroidery, re-sewing up the back, applying the tag and the tack.

Hooray! Can't wait to try it out again tomorrow.

I'm continuing on my fingerless glove kick.
Not only are they a great way for me to work through leftover odds and ends in my yarn stash, they are also the perfect accessory for this time of year while the chill is still hanging around.

I've posted the following two pairs for sale on Etsy. They area looser fit and offer more arm coverage than the purple glove pictured above.

The panel will be accepting vendors of all genres including jewelry, knits, paper and zines. In other news, I've been super busy making music this month with my former band, the mellowtraumatics. We played our first show in mmmmmmph years at a sold-out Maxwells this past weekend and it was stupidly fun. Other ghosts included Small Am, Ben Travato and The Milwaukees (original line-up).

I might be the worst blogger on the planet.
I'm constantly thinking of things to write about... the problem is effectively getting them out of my head. Anyhoo.

It has been a pretty amazing few months. I went and got hitched and we bought a house... the most adorable house, which I've discovered is going to be the greatest craft project of all time.

The day after we moved in, I packed up my wares and set off with my friend, night-light designer Anna Yong Muniz. It was the very first "live" show for both of us and we had THE BEST time. We couldn't have asked for a more positive experience. Elen, of 919Gallery as well as the PADNA volunteers were incredibly accomodating and organized. I am looking forward to working with them again.

The next thing I would like to shout from the mountain-tops is the launch of the Jersey City Craft Mafia. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of this endeavor and have extremely high hopes for what we are going to accomplish as a group. I am pleased to report that I have test driven one of my clean cloths and ran them through a washer and dryer cycle. It came out great! A little shrinkage which is to be expected with 100% cotton, but all in all a success! Still fluffy and soft!

So, my camera is still on the blink, but my Mom was kind enough to lend me her camera to get me through the slump.

As previously mentioned, I'm trying to incorporate as much eco-friendliness into my crafting as possible.

I made these lovely little organic clean cloths - perfect gifts for housewarming, for the bride, for baby or for your own environmentally-friendly home.

In addition to the super-soft clean cloths, I've been making these fun flowers out of my ever-increasing plastic shopping bag collection. I will be listing them in the next day or so.
The up-cycled flowers would make excellent gift bows/ adornments for your eco-conscious friends!

I feel like I haven't posted here in 100 years.
Between cranking out earrings and necklaces (which still need to be photographed... agh!), I've been really busy with finishing up school and planning my wedding.

Here are the facts:

I'm getting married in September.
I have less than three months to pull this all together.
I want to incorporate as much DIY as I can feasibly handle.
I also want to keep it as eco-conscious as possible.

I'm not sure if I was emotionally prepared for the undertaking of wedding planning. My thoughts all along were "Why make a big deal out of it? It's one day! I'm going to keep it simple."

It is really easy to lose sight of those initial thoughts when you're in the trenches navigating the vendors, the gaudy decor and general heavy pressure of the wedding machine. For instance, I was not aware that peel and eat shrimp was tacky. I didn't realise that wedding invitations had so many moving parts. And who knew that a certain kind of chair was preferred for receptions.
Not me.

Is there a place to put my ass while I eat?
Yes?
Good.

Anyway, I'm going to be posting a series called my DIYish wedding where I will share my happiness and my hell with you, gentle reader.

Guess who's been really lazy about posting lately?
Hint: Me.

I attended a superfly bachelorette party last weekend and just had to make some favors for the lovely ladies. I stuffed some pink striped bags with candy, temporary tattoos and these personalized necklaces!

I'm debating whether to list them yet. I need to put an order into Rio Grande for some supplies. I wish my magical economy boosting check would arrive soon. Grrrrr.

I've also been diligently working on a baby blanket for some friends who just had a beautiful baby girl. I don't want to post pictures until it's done. I forgot how long it takes to make a baby blanket. I'm really happy with the way it's coming out though. I tried a new stitch. Woot.

In other news my dog has been cracking me up lately. I got some free samples of these complete meal bars and he insists on hiding them all over the house. I first noticed him walking around in circles and whining with the bar in his mouth. I realized he was looking for a place to bury it. I watched him try to bury it in his bed. I found one in my chair and on the stairs. I have to take a video of it next time. It's ridiculously cute.

Afghans for Afghans: Shawls for New Mothers

Afghans for Afghans just announced a project to create shawls for new mothers in the maternity ward of the CURE hospital in Kabul. I was interviewing Ann Rubin, the organizer, about the initiative and after I explained the advantages of weaving (fast, finer yarns, uses less materials, etc.) she said, "Oh my gosh, I need weavers!"
This is a chance to show the knitting world what weaving is all about, as well as warm up the lives of mothers and their newborn babies in Afghanistan.
Want to help out? There are three ways to get involved:

1) Spread the word: tell your guild, your weaving buddies, etc.

2) Donate yarn. Got a stash of fine-weight wool that you know you're never going to weave up? Send it to me at WeaveZine and I'll put it in the hands of a weaver who'll weave a shawl in your name.

3) Weave a shawl (or two, or three...) and send it to Afghans for Afghans. Details, including the guidelines of what to weave are online at HERE.

So it's been quite a while since I last posted. There was some dog drama last week. Poochie's separation anxiety is not getting any better. He chewed through the door we put up, got loose and destroyed some stuff. Lots of stuff. Not pretty.

Luckily, the BeeF is sweet and wonderful and always fair... he has agreed to give the Pooch one more chance. We're bringing him to the dog behaviorist on Tuesday. Please keep your fingers crossed for us and send happy thoughts to the Pooch.

Anyway, I made a bunch of fun stuff.
Washcloths crocheted with organic cotton yarn.

These are SO so soft and the colors are so lovely.

I made a couple of little pouches from the yarn in the last post.

I used vintage buttons for the closures... they look really cute.

The pouches above inspired me to make some little "pick pockets" for my guitar.

You can use them for anything really... spare change, i.d. cards, lip balm. They're totally customizable, too. I can make them in any size and color.

I bought some beautiful hand-dyed wool from Wool Mountain's de-stash shop. I LOVE it.

I'm making some little pouches with it. The colors are really vibrant. Reminds me of springtime. Yay. I think I'm going to start doing a de-stash of my own. I have SO much yarn. And beads. And who knows what else...

I'm also making some upcycled plastic bag totes... something I've been meaning to try for quite some time. If anyone would like to donate used Target bags for this project by mail, please email me. The Target bags are making a cute polka-dot-like design. I'm shocked that I don't have too many around my house considering my giant Target obsession.

I'm also considering making a kitchen rug out of an old bed-sheet. But I'm not certain how I'm going to approach that.

It's nice to be crocheting so much again... but my wrists are starting to cramp again. Bah.
Also, I want to take up knitting soon.

So... I'm a little edgy this week.
I guess its the exams. I bombed one on Monday and I have another tonight. My stomach actually dropped as I was typing that. I really hate tests. Such pressure. Such a do-or-die feeling.

So, yes, I've been a little satanic. I have zero patience. I have not actually spoken to any human beings outside of my job or the BF this week. I suppose that I become a little bit of a hermit crab when I'm working through something. This is ok with me because hermit crabs, of course, are awesome. All crabs are awesome.

Ok, back on planet earth... I put an Alchemy bid on Etsy to do a purse. It's my first bid ever, which was a little harrowing. It was nice to break the ice though. I hope to do more bids in the future.

I have other things to talk about but now is not the time.

So, apparently I'm a little late to the party here... but in case YOU live under the rock next to mine, Go to Pandora Radio.

Nikkol was kind enough to steer me in their direction and I can't thank her enough. I'm always looking for new music because I get sick of things pretty quickly. Also, my musical taste is a little cyclical. I go from country phases to Motown phases to crunchy rock phases and so on and so forth. I am VERY excited about this.

So this weekend was very fun. While my lovely BeeF was at rock and roll camp, I filled my schedul to the brim. On Saturday, I went to Hoboken to meet up with some members of EtsyNJ. It was nice to put faces with names and to spend some time with some other craft-minded folk. I think I get so lost in my own crafty head sometimes. It's good to know I'm not alone.

Saturday night, I got together with some ladyfriends for wine and stories. My cheeks still hurt from laughing. Sunday... well, Sunday is when I lost my mind.

I bought some shrinkable plastic (er... shrinky dinks) and went ka-razy with it. I have three new pairs of earrings and several necklaces to post. I'm particularly excited about the earrings. I'll try to get pics up later today.

Yesterday, I unearthed the Badge-a-Minit that I purchased last year. I had no success with it on the first try so I stuffed it in a drawer. I don't know what prompted me to pick it up again, but I'm glad I did. I've been turning little doodles into wearable buttons.

It was really warm out this afternoon, so I took the dog for a nice, long walk. On a little side street around the corner from my house, I passed this:

It's now the desktop background on my computer. If it wasn't so soggy and dirty, I would have taken it home.

I bought some shrinky-dinks at the craft store today. I'm debating whether or not to bust them out. I have lots of ideas. But its midnight. Hmmmm...

The BF in Texas this weekend, playing his rock and roll. I miss him. The boys and I are holding down the fort though. Poochie's already passed out from all the partying.

So... tonight... walking from class to my car... I had kind of a strange confrontation. I passed two individuals talking in the atrium of my college building. They stopped their conversation as I passed and then hurriedly followed me out the door.
I hastened my pace a bit.
So did they.

"Excuse me... I'm sorry to bother you... can I just ask you a quick question?"

I turned around and slowed my pace slightly. I figured that a.) They were other Psychology students conducting a survey, which is common in that particular hall... or b.) They didn't know where the student center or some other campus building was.
I stopped.

"Have you ever heard of God the Mother and the bible?"

Now, the first time I heard this, I was in the mall several weeks ago. The pair caught me off guard. "God the what?" slipped out of my mouth before I ultimately threw up my hand and said "No thanks. I'm good" as I walked away.

I consider myself an open minded and tolerant person. While I not particularly religious, I come from a fairly religious family and have friends in varying degrees of devoutness to their respective faiths. I respect religion as an institution as well as our individual rights to practice as we please.

I also understand that in some faiths, it is customary for the young adult members to spread the word to their greater community as rite of passage into adulthood.

That being said, I guess I just wanted to voice my concern about the manner in which I was approached twice in several weeks time. Both times I was walking alone. Both times were at night and both times I was approached by a pair of people. Maybe it's my own paranoia and anxiety, but I found it to be a little aggressive and somewhat intimidating.

I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced a similar scenario and what your thoughts were. Also, does anyone know what group these people are a part of? My internet searches didn't give me much info.

Again, I am not knocking the religion or their beliefs, I simply found their recruitment tactics to be a bit uncomfortable.

And when I say helping, I mean not crapping all over the floor.

Poochie is a bit of a neurotic little mutt. I had to take him to the vet last week because he suffers from such severe separation anxiety and because I'm 3 inches from suffering a nervous breakdown from coming home to a poopy peepy kitchen every day. The vet put him on Prozac.
Yeah.

So far, no progress... but I suppose like people Prozac, it will take several weeks for it to kick in. As angry as the mess and the barking and whining makes me, I feel so bad for this little guy. I know what is like to be in a panic. I know how it feels to be scared. I really hope this works because he is such a pea when he's not destroying things.

I totally forgot that I bought a slot in the Showcase today on Etsy.
I got some hearts and a bunch of views on the featured items. I even made a sale on a pair of earrings. Hooray!

I applied for the Craftacular the other day. So, if you have any spare karma, please sent it my way. It would be such a huge honor to be a part of it. Regardless of whether or not I get in, my butt will be there. I can't wait!

I'm working on some new earrings tonight. I got two pairs of earrings on sale at Target last year which I've been meaning to decoupage. I just remembered today... so that's my current project. I'll upload some pics later. They're different from my other stuff. Kind of an experiment. We'll see what happens.

I also took pics of my journals... I'll have to upload those too.

Took a while to load, but that's one of my favorites.

Ok, so I'm in the process of finishing up my newest bag. I'm hoping to have pics up by the end of the week. Woot. I also need to make a new batch of bubble rings and decoupage some earrings.
Since I don't have band rehearsal tonight, I think I'm gonna get cracking on those things. Sounds like fun.

Last night, I busted out my journal... which I barely even touch anymore. I'm trying to keep it with me again. Hoping for some inspiration. I'll have to take some pictures of it. My journals, if I do say so myself, are pretty fly. I collage them and draw in them. They're really fun. Fully of crazy rambling, but the look cool. Kind of like me. Pfffff.

I need to start exercising more regularly. I say this all the time but I really need to stick to it. I think my main problem is that I let myself sleep in really late. I need to really commit to waking up early each morning and making the most of the day. This means I should probably have a bed-time before 3am.

Ok. Stop whining.

The weekend went by entirely too quickly.
I had a snow day, looked at some condos, had dinner with friends, went to my brother's metal band show... and now, I'm writing to you from my kitchen with my cozy wrist-warmers on, sipping on a glass of organic red wine. Mmmm.

I just registered mySparkletree.com.
I was able to find a coupon code for a good deal - $19.99. Not too shabby.

I've also registered for a free-trial of .Mac. It looks so nice and easy that I need to give it a try. I just think it would be great to have a domain where I can link to Etsy, this blog, my music and my pictures. I'm not ready to commit to anything yet... just want to give fair warning that I may be up and leaving this url in the future. Here is my trial site.

Don't fret... I'll leave a link if I decide to move.

In other news, I decided to finally do an Etsy showcase. I got a slot on March 5th. I don't quite understand the concept and wasn't sure about the significance of my choice of day... but it's inexpensive to try. So, we'll see what happens.

So, I'm feeling 100% better and I have been one busy bee!

First of all, I finished up another Baby Cloud Pillow. I think I'm going to throw them up onto Etsy as custom items. I think they would make really sweet baby gifts (decoration only, of course.).

Next, I finished the latest addition to the Sparkletree Pocketbook Collection.

Ain't she purty? I'm really psyched about the size of this bag. It fits my 12" iBook like a glove and hangs perfectly under my arm. Add in the pockets and delicious cherry tones, and you have one practical, functional and very pretty pocketbook.

Lastly, I finally finished the BF's birthday present. I had been searching for cylindrical Eames-era style lampshades for his studio but was having no luck finding the perfect pair. I really wanted to make my own, but had no idea where to buy the correct kind of fiberglass and hardware. Luckily, I stumbled upon deadlynightshades.com's do-it-yourself kits in all different shapes and sizes which you dye and decorate yourself. SCORE!

When I find something that I really like, I like to share with you, gentle readers.
So, you know how I've been complaining about arm/ wrist pain from crocheting so much, right? Right.

The ThermaCare wrist wraps were really helpful, but they were getting expensive at $7 a pair. So, I began searching for something I could maybe heat up and re-use. My search led me to designerwheatbags.com, an Australian company selling handmade microwavable, wheat-bag gloves. I received my (purple) pair last week and am in LOVE with them. They smell like heaven and feel great.

Note that the prices listed are in Australian dollars. Including shipping, they came out to about $50ish. They are SO worth it for any crafters with wrist pain!

I completed the first baby could pillow, well, technically it's the second. I took pics and left my camera at home... so, I'll put them up asap. Also, I finally found the matching red Patons yarn that I have been looking for. Turns out it was in AC Moore the whole time. Now I don't have to go to Michael's ever again. I hate that place. This means I can finally get finish up my newest pocketbook - Justine. This will be great for Valentine's Day because it's pinks and reds and very sweet.

My hands are still a mess. I went to the doctor last week. She wanted to wait a few weeks to see if the pain subsided. If not, blood-work, I suppose. The pain is still here... though the stretches really seem to help.

Nothing very exciting going on. I'm working on a paper for school.

I, unfortunately had to go to the local high school to vote... during school hours. In fact, when I got there, I had to enter through the cafeteria while they were changing classes. I seriously panicked. All of a sudden, I was fifteen - hunched shoulders, clutching books to my chest, nervously running my fingers through my hair, glancing all around while pretending not to.

Cripes. I hated high school.

My BF and I went to his former high school a few months ago to check out their craft fair (which was abysmal, by the way) and we were both way too uncomfortable to be there. It's funny how that stays with you... like the bricks they build high schools with have magical powers.

I digress. I voted. It was anti-climactic. I didn't even get an "I Voted" sticker. But whatever. I'm glad I went.

Today was my weigh-in with Calorie King. I used my home scale and apparently lost four pounds. This is totally impossible because I ate like a 500-lb man all week. We're going to yoga tonight, so I'll use the gym scale. I did lose an inch or so in my waist and hips though - and I'm a notch down on my belt.

I ate a delicious, healthy and filling lunch, so I feel good about that. Soup and a sammich. You really can't lose with that combo on a crappy day like today.

Speaking of weight loss, a member of EtsyNJ posted these adorable "Skinny Bitch" bracelets. What a cute idea.

As far as my current projects, I'm making a slew of baby cloud pillows for friends and family. I'm gonna toss a few up on my Etsy post haste.

I'm finally biting the bullet and uploading my pocketbooks. I've decided to call them pocketbooks instead of handbags because a.) I think pocketbook is a fun word to say and b.) "handbags" keep reminding me of "funbags."

I have really horrible pain in my hands the past few days. I woke up with swollen fingers yesterday and my wrists have a dull ache today. I'm going to give it a couple more days and then I suppose I'll get it checked out. This is stinkarella considering if I'm not at the computer, I'm crocheting... if I'm not crocheting, I'm playing the guitar... or the piano... or pointing at things.

I've been promising to put up pics of the handbags. I will have them up this week. I want to have a bunch to put up at the same time. I'm really psyched about how they are coming along.

So, the Anna handbag is basically finished... although I'm not 100% sold on the handle/ strap. I may need to re-do it. I'm really happy about the colors on this one - very earthy tones!

So "where are the pictures", you ask?

They're coming.
I want to put them up a few at a time. Once I settle this handle/ strap issue and needle felt the design, I'll put all three up. I have two more designs in my head. I'm going to get started on them tonight!

Also... the Borders by me is closing so there are MAD discounts over there. I'm sure I will buy out half the store over the course of the next week. The folks at EtsyNJ posted about a cool challenge/ blog called Create-A-Day in which you... well... create one item a day! I think that's really a great approach for the new year! So, in the spirit of create-a-day, I'm going to have a daily section chronicling what I'm working on. I'm not going to push myself to complete an item every day... but I at least want to be sure that I make some creative progress.

Yay.

Last night, I recorded acoustic tracks for two songs. Playing the guitar still freaks me out.

Tonight... hmmm... tonight I shall crochet. I would like company though.

I'm getting a little nervous because I have a constant dull ache in my right wrist... my crocheting wrist... I'm not going to think about it. The crappy thing is that I'm about 3/4 finished with my handbag and I had to stop last night because it hurt. I'll take a couple days off, I guess.

Anyhoo... I got my little "crochet geek" decal and it's way cute. I think the shirt is coming today!

My band is doing some more recording tonight so we can hopefully get moving on releasing the EP by the spring time. We applied for SXSW... which is in March, so in the event that we get in, it would be nice to have some music to hand out. Again... I don't even know what to think about that either. It's in the hands of fate, now. No use dwelling on it.

Also, I just got confirmation that my Final Audit is being processed at school. More stuff out of my hands.

I really need to step it up with my posts.
I guess I'm kind of pre-occupied with all of this puppy business.
I'm pleased to report, however that we seem to be reaching a comfortable point. Maybe that's just because I've been home all weekend. I don't know. I think that the cat, Mousey calms Poochie down a bit. I left them both in the kitchen last night while I went to a friend's in Brooklyn and I came back to a fairly peaceful household.

Other than that, I've started up on my next felted hand-bag. I'm doing a deep purple blend... not sure what the applique is going to be yet. I bought some new loose wool in several bright colors, so I have a nice pallette to choose from. Thank you, Mom for the gift certificate to AC Moore... my favorite place on earth.

So, as for school... I'm really re-thinking the whole Art Therapy thing. One of my teachers last semester kept driving home to us that we should not enter into any Masters program that we are not PASSIONATE about. While I'm passionate about the art side, I'm not certain that I'm passionate about the therapy side any more.

I'm thinking that until I decide, I should just finish up my BA in Psych (since I have like 4 classes left) and then worry about Masters. I was trying to piggy-back some art courses into my curriculum at MSU, but there is no studio arts minor... so unless I'm 100% sure about graduate school, I could be wasting lots of time and money.

But then what? Do I go back and get a BFA? Do I need to?
I just want to create things. That brings me the most joy in life. I suppose I just have to figure out how to pay the rent doing so.

Ugh.

Lots to think about and I would love any advice you have to offer.

PS - Both shows went really well last week. Southpaw is awesome and Maxwell's is always fun. Next stop, The Goldhawk on January 24th.

Puppy woes...

Things are going a little slow in the training department with my fine-furry friend. He seems to have MAJOR separation anxiety... which kept us up literally ALL night while he was supposed to be sleeping in his crate. I gave up on sleeping at about 7:45 am and took him out for a brisk walk.

We both promptly fell asleep in front of the television when we returned. This, of course, caused me to be late for work.

He's totally calm and content if we're in his sight... but the second he can't see us, he really spazzes out! I've signed him up for a 6 week training course beginning on the 19th. I really hope this works because I do like sleeping at night.

We're also having some housebreaking issues with him. He seems to go when and where he pleases even though we have been taking him out regularly. The unfortunate thing is, he does not seem to like any of the treats I bought for him... so positive re-enforcement is a bit of a challenge.

Anyway...

Lots going on this week... my band is playing two shows - one in Brooklyn and one in Hoboken - on Thursday and Friday.

I'm hoping to complete another handbag by this weekend as well... and catch up on my sleep.

I'm sort of proud of myself... I completed my very first felted item today!

I referred to a handbag pattern from the Stitch 'N Bitch crochet book for the basic shape. I then felted the purse and needle-felted my own bluebird design into it.
I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

I've given it to my boyfriend's sister as a late-Christmas gift. I'm hoping that it holds up!

He is quite possibly, the sweetest creature I have ever come across.

We adopted him today and he has been constantly showering us with kisses and snuggles from the moment we got into the car. He is such a snugglebutt. I fell in love with him instantly.

It has been a relaxing and happy week!

I bought some cool crochet and sewing books for myself and am looking forward to trying out some new ideas in the New Year!

I am... so... sick... of snow.
Seriously... every NJ winter that I experience reminds me that I'm really ready to move to warmer pastures.

Ok. Complaining quota = filled.

I was able to get some more scarves done this weekend and I'm really happy with how they turned out. These guys are special-order, but I'm hoping that they will generate some commission orders.

Also, once the Holiday orders are filled, I think I'm going to make one for myself. Believe it or not, I don't have one of my own! It's time.

So, it's an exciting day here at Sparkletree.
In addition to the arrival of Esmeralda, I finally took some pictures of the handmade decorations I made for my Christmas tree.
I didn't have any ornaments, so in keeping with my Handmade Pledge, I took some yarn, buttons and plastic beads and got to work. I think they look cute. The tree is very sparkley.

The purple picture you see is my purple fish handbag. I'm not sure if I'm going to list it or not. I may have to just try it out for myself as a prototype.

Then I had to practice the piano because we're playing a brand new song at our show on 12/20! Yay!

A few days ago, B* sent me a cryptic email asking whether I could receive UPS deliveries. When I told her I could, she sent me a shipment confirmation that an item would arrive today.

As I climbed the stairs to my house I saw a box that was practically as tall as me! I was mostly excited... and a little scared, knowing B*s occasionally twisted sense of humor. I pulled the box inside, half expecting her to pop out of it... when lo and behold... I found this lovely little lady:

I had been pining for a dress form for months!
Isn't she great???

I have named her Esmeralda and she will be modeling all things Sparkletree from now on! Today, she's modeling a (reserved) child's scarf.

So, a million thanks to B* and warm welcome to Esmeralda!

I almost forgot to mention.
Emily August of GoGoDistro has inspired me to take a two month pledge to not purchase anything "new".

The pledge is as follows:

I've been feeling pretty yucky today. I woke up with a sore throat and sore everything. Plus, our heater is broken so only two rooms are warm. Ugh!

So, I'm camped out in front of the TV with our portable heaters running full steam. I made the cat a sweater. I think that makes me at least 30% creepier.

Ha!

I think he looks handsome.

The handbag handles came in yesterday from Diddee Dits. They look great and the seller was a real pleasure to work with. She kept in touch and shipped super-quickly. Be sure to check out her shop. She's got some absolutely adorable kids' hats (this one's my favorite) and pretty printed bags.

Of course, I dove right in and attached one set of handles to a handbag I'd been crocheting. I think it looks really good. I'll post some pictures up later today.

In other news, I've decided that I'm going to buy handmade for the majority of my Christmas shopping. I'm going to start making my list now!

I'm at a little bit of an impasse though with one of my bags.
To line or not to line... that is the question.

A lined crochet bag makes more sense, but I feel like the lining takes away from the flexibility of it. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

Who knows.

In other news, I ran across this blog today.
I thought the drawings were lovely.

Speaking of drawings, I need to get cracking on making a flyer for my band's next show.
